Tholu Bommalata is the prominent shadow puppetry in the state. It translates as "dance of leather puppets". The puppets are made of goat hide and are brightly colored. Traditionally, vegetable dyes were used to paint the puppets. Artificial dyes, which are now commercially available, are also used to paint puppets. The puppet figure is perforated as needed, and the eyeballs are painted last. A tiny bamboo pole tied to the puppet keeps it vertically straight. By pushing the puppets on a white screen, they may be controlled. The audience can see the shadow or image.
