A contemporary city in southern Egypt, Luxor is the capital of the Luxor Governorate and home to the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Waset.

In Arabic, Karnak means fortified village. This is a complex comprising corroded shrines, chapels, towers and other structures. It includes Karnak Open Air Museum, the second most visited site in Egypt.

In the Theban necropolis, near Nile, the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramesses II has its roots in the 13th century BC, and portrays scenes of his campaign against Dapur.

Also known by the name of Djeser-Djeseru, this temple was built for Pharaoh Hatshepsut from the 18th dynasty, below the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari on the western banks of Nile.

Also identified as the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, the construction in this area is over 500 years old, dating back to the 16th and 11th centuries BC. KV62 is the most famous tomb here, belonging to Tutankhamun.
