The city of Silchar, or Shilchar as it is pronounced locally, is located on the banks of the Barak River. This city serves as the district capital of Assam's Cachar District and is home to a wide variety of interesting landmarks. The city's position in the peaceful Barak Valley makes it an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Barack valley's placid demeanour is what inspired India's former prime minister, Indira Gandhi, to dub it the “island of peace.” Due to its rocky riverbank, the city got its name from the Bengali terms “shil” and “char,” which translate to “rock” and “riverside,” respectively. The city is home to Assam University's main campus as well as the National Institute of Technology. Additionally, the city is home to one of the world's oldest polo clubs.
