The INS Kursura Submarine served in the Indian Navy for 31 glorious years starting from the year 1969. It was finally decommissioned in 2001. Carrying an I-641 Class Soviet-built design, it is located on the Ramakrishna Beach Road, Gajapathi Raju Marg. The museum that this submarine contains was built at a whopping cost of INR 6 Crore, approximately. The submarine is about 91.3 meters long with a 6-meter draught and retains its original design as a museum with only preservative changes to keep it from corroding.
It is maintained by the Youth Advancement, Tourism and Cultural Development Department in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The guides and curators of the museum have been hired from retired Navy personnel. It was also used by the Indian Navy in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 for patrolling.
