About Almaty Zoo History


The Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR initiated building the Almaty Zoo in January 1935, which was officially inaugurated on November 7, 1937. Murzakhan Otelbayev was an experienced hunter and expert in Semirechye, and he was responsible for selecting the place for building the very first zoo in the republic near the local fauna, such as saigas, mountain goats, and gazelles. In addition, they have also acquired many animals from various institutions, including hyenas, jackals, caracals, polar bears, reindeer, emus, bison, and nilgai antelopes.
