It is believed that Tirumala was to begin with Adi Varaha Kshetra, which means that it was the home of Sri Adi Varaha Swami. It was only later with his permission that Lord Sri Venkateswara took up residence here.

That is why it is said that devotees should first offer naivedyam to Sri Adi Varaha Swami, and then visit the Sri Venkateswara Temple.

As per the Atri Samhita (Samurtarchanadhikara), the Varaha avatara is worshipped in three forms including, Adi Varaha, Pralaya Varaha and Yajna Varaha. The idol in Tirumala is that of Adi Varaha.

The temple is located facing the Sri Venkateswara Temple, on the banks of Swami Pushkarini.
