Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC) is a wonderful initiative taken for preservation of North East India's native heritage. It was established by the regional Salesians of Don Bosco – a Roman Catholic institute. The operational areas of this cultural centre include exhibition of precious artefacts, researches and journal publications, through which it provides an insight into the rich indigenous heritage.

The 7-storey cultural centre has 56000 sq ft of floor space and about 15000 sq ft of wall space, which has been divided into 17 distinct museum galleries. These galleries have multimedia presentation facility, which makes the visit all the more interesting and informative. From traditions and art forms to endemic flora and fauna, these galleries acquaint visitors with different aspects of the state and its civilisation. Not only of the state, but the museum here displays anthropological artefacts of several other regions in India.

An anthropologist's paradise, the museum provides complete information about human civilisation, right from its beginning. Articles depicting the religions, traditions and vivid cultures of the region are displayed here. Traditional hunting tools, utensils and agricultural equipment used by locals are preserved in the museum. It has a collection of tribal costumes and traditional jewellery that is quite impressive. Ancient paintings, musical instruments and exclusive photographs are other things that can be seen in the museum.

The local art forms of the region are displayed in a special gallery, where visitors can also enjoy watching interesting performances. Besides, the Alcove Gallery of this cultural centre has 22 different compartments; each dedicated to a different tribe of the North East. The Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures has a high Sky Walk, which offers a stunning panoramic view of Shillong.
