Out of the 22 theerthams in Rameswaram, Jadayu Theertham is quite popular and holds immense religious significance. There is an interesting legend from the Hindu Epic - Ramayana associated with the origin of this temple.

Jadayu (king of birds) fell at the temple site while fighting against Ravana (demon king) to save Lord Rama's consort, Goddess Sita. Later, a temple was constructed at the place where he fell and died. This temple, surrounded by sand dunes, also features a pond that is filled with water, which is sweet in taste.
