The State Museum was opened in 1962 and is the best State Museum of the country. On entering the museum you will be greeted by the bronze statue of Captain Fransis Light, the founder of the Penang Straits Settlements. The museum is divided into galleries which show the historic events which took place in Penang.

The museum has a great collection of photographs, maps, historic documents and costumes. The art gallery on the other hand shows the works of the local artists as well as international artists. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Entry fee RM 10.
