Founded in the year 1968, Folklore Museum is one of Mysore's most popular tourist attractions. It mainly exhibits an expansive collection of artworks and crafts that belong to different parts of the state. It is located in the imposing Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, which stands within the Mysore University Campus. Since its inception, the university has made immense contributions towards the folklore study.

In this museum, there are around 6500 folklore articles on display, making it one of the biggest of its sorts in Asia. A collection of intricately carved wooden figures that have been collected from different villages of Karnataka can also be seen in this museum. Temple chariots, masks, costumes from Yakshagana plays and religious objects are among the museum's proud possessions.

The museum is divided into different wings that are inter-connected by arched walkways. A beautiful fountain has been set in the courtyard that lies at the centre of the main hall. Graced with marvellous carvings, the interiors of this museum draw the attention of onlookers instantly.
