Affiliated with the esteemed Spituk Gompa, the Sankar Monastery is an important place of worship in the valley of Leh. This monastery follows the lineage of Gelug, which is the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhism. Apart from being an important shrine, it is the residence of The Kushok Bakul – the regional head of Gelug. The image of this sect's founder Tsong-kha-pa can be seen in the shrine's main prayer space. A representation of Avalokitesvara – the revered bodhisattva of compassion is also present in the monastery. In addition, this monastery has a small temple dedicated to Dukar – an important guardian deity of Tibetan Buddhism.
