"The spectacular landscape of Leh and Ladakh is dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries, which speak of the architectural splendour, miraculous legends and deep-rooted religious association. Situated in isolated hamlets of the region, these old shrines form the famous Monastery Circuit that is a tourism highlight in Ladakh. These monasteries belong to various sects of Tibetan Buddhism, which have their own differences and similarities. Vibrant religious celebrations, imposing chortens and mane walls are the common features of these religious edifices. Owing to their historical and religious significance, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regards many of the monasteries in Ladakh as monuments of national importance.

There are several monasteries in the Leh and Ladakh region, which are known for their respective specialities. Lamayuru Monastery is amongst the oldest monasteries in the region that is a significant monastic home and storehouse of precious Buddhist artefacts. On the other hand, Alchi Monastery earns recognition for its exquisite wooden carvings and sculptures. Hemis Monastery grabs attention for the extravagance of its annual festival while the one at Thiksey is known for its architectural beauty. Equally impressive are the monasteries of Likir and Phyang, which boast of a rich collection of religious antiques and ancient scriptures. Other famous shrines of the Monastery Circuit in Ladakh are Spituk, Shey and Sankar, where tranquillity and spirituality can be experienced."
