One of the most famous festivals in Ladakh is the Matho Nagrang Festival, also known as the festival of the oracles. This Buddhist celebration is held in the Matho Monastery, situated in the village of Matho, 26 kilometers from Leh on the banks of the Indus River.

Matho Nagrang is celebrated on the 15th day of the 1st month of the Tibetan calendar. During this two-day festival, there are mask dance performances by monks of the monastery while wearing colorful silk brocaded robes and mask depicting various forms of Gods and Goddesses.

The highlight of the festival are the two oracles who after a full of month meditation in complete isolation, make their appearance in the courtyard accompanied by mask dancers. They make predictions about the future. Locals and tourists from far-off places come to seek their advice.
