Raj Bhavan is one of Kolkata's finest Colonial buildings. Built in 1803, this grand structure was once the Government House and later, the official residence of the Viceroy of India. From 1911 to 1947, it served as the residence of Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Since India’s independence in the year 1947, it is being used as the residence of the Governor of West Bengal.

Built across three floors, it flaunts brilliant neoclassical style of architecture and distinct baroque overtones. Started in the year 1799 by designer - Capt. Charles Wyatt, the construction of this building took four years to complete. The complex sprawls over an area of 27 acres, and the total area over which the mansion stands is 84000 sq ft. There are six grand arched gateways in Raj Bhavan - two each towards East and West, and one each towards North and South.

There are four residential suites, two spacious drawing rooms and a large dining room inside the Raj Bhavan. Besides 60 rooms, this edifice also has banquet halls, public halls, verandahs, spacious porticoes and the exclusive Throne room, which displays the thrones of Tipu Sultan and Wellesley. In addition to thrones, there are oil paintings of Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Dr. B C Roy and Jawaharlal Nehru. The Urn, used for carrying ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, is also kept in the Throne room.

Among the halls and banquet rooms, the Council Chamber, The Marble Hall and The Banquet Hall deserve special mention. At present, the governor conducts private and state meetings in the Council Chamber and The Marble Hall. Graced with rows of Doric pillars, floral chandeliers and dark Mahogany tables, The Banquet Hall is one of the most elegant event spaces of this palatial structure.
