Home to an excess of historical, cultural and modern attractions, Maidan is Kolkata’s tourist magnet. Literally meaning 'open field', Maidan is the city's largest urban park that stretches from Raj Bhawan in the north to the National Library in the south. Owing to its greenery and freshness, this property of the Indian Army has been rightly nicknamed as 'Lungs of Kolkata'. With landmarks like Eden Gardens, Kolkata Race Course, the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and a host of historical sites, Maidan is a destination in itself.

The core of Maidan is an open field with no buildings but few roads and tram tracks. The field is quite expansive – stretching from the Victoria Memorial on the east to the Hooghly River on the West. Besides serving as a hub of entertainment and leisure for the people of Kolkata, this is also an important historical and cultural centre. On your visit to Maidan, do step in the M.P. Birla Planetarium, Rabindra Sadan (Cultural Centre), Academy of Fine Arts, and Nandan (Film and Cultural Centre).

Maidan is also speckled with a number of statues of renowned personalities. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Chittaranjan Das, Matangini Hazra, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sri Aurobindo, Pritilata Waddedar, Gostho Pal and Indira Gandhi are some of the notable dignitaries whose statues can be seen here. In addition to all these, Maidan is dotted with quaint tiny greenish houses (sport club houses) and playgrounds. Green, energetic and history-rich – Maidan is a place one must never miss to explore on a trip to Kolkata.
