Boasting of a huge collection of over 12,000 species of plants, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden is the oldest botanical garden in the country. Spanning across an area of 109 hectares, this garden was founded by Colonel Kyd in the year 1786.

The highlight of the garden is the Great Banyan Tree, which is renowned for having the world's largest canopy. In addition to living plants, there are more than two and half million dried plant specimens collected from different corners of the world. You will be amazed to know that the tea grown in Assam and Darjeeling was first developed in these gardens. Here, you can find some of the rare trees that are indigenous to Nepal, Java, Brazil, Penang and Sumatra. Lofty Mahogany, Cuban Palms, Mango and Tamarind trees greatly enhance the greenery of the place. .

At the garden's Orchid House, you can have a glimpse of a wide variety of rare and common orchids. Do not forget to step in the on-site library and enjoy boating in the picturesque serpentine lake.
