Listed among the eight popular forts of the Chandela rulers, the Kalinjar Fort rests 244 metres above the plains on a flat-topped rocky hill of the Vindhya Range. Although many rulers fought fierce battles to win this fort, the Chandelas managed to control it for a long time. Every Chandela king who ruled the fort left a mark through fine artwork, sculptures and stone images.

The fort is a grand and unique structure with several doorways. Most iconic among them are the Alam Darwaza, Ganesha Darwaza, Chandi Darwaza, Hanuman Darwaza, Lal Darwaza, Bara Darwaza and Chauburji Darwaza.

Apart from the beautifully carved gateways, other amazing features of this fort are a colossal rock figure of Lord Bhairava, statue of Lord Hanuman, a reservoir named Hanumankund, and rock sculptures of gods and goddesses like Lord Shiva, Kali, Chandika, Parvati and Ganesha. The Palace of Prince Aman Singh, Venkat Bihari Temple and the pond of million teerthas are other proud possessions of the fort.

Within the historical edifice, several shrines were established between the 3rd and 5th century.
