Temple of the Gadaladenia is a sacred Buddhist site and consists of an ancient monastery built on a flat rock. This holy temple is essentially a stupa with four sided chapels containing images of Lord Buddha and wall paintings. According to an inscription in the temple, it was built by King Buwanekabahu IV in the year 1344.

The shrine room at the temple has a seated Lord Buddha statue under a Makara Thorana. This Makara Thorana has images of gods such as Brahma, Suyama, Santhusuta, Natha and Maithree.
