Located next to the Temple of Tooth, the National Museum of Kandy was once a part of the Royal Palace of Kandy. It was called Palle Vahala – the palace where the Queens of the Kings lived. It was opened to public as Kandy National Museum in 1942.

The museum houses various artifacts depicting the history and culture of Kandy and of the British era Sri Lanka. The artifacts include tools, weapons, handicrafts and jewelries. The National Museum of Kandy has on display a copy of the 1815 agreement that handed over the Kandyan provinces to British colonists.
