Vaishno Devi Mandir is one of the most popular and revered pilgrimage centres in India. Dedicated to the Hindu deity Vaishno Devi, endearingly known as Mata Rani (Goddess Durga), this holy abode of the goddess is situated at an altitude of 5200 feet. It is believed that the goddess resides in a holy cave of the three-peaked mountain known as Trikuta, near the town of Katra in Jammu. Devotees of all age groups screaming ‘Jai Mata Di’ at the top of their voices is quite motivating.

Unlike most of the temples where you will find idols, here, there are no statues. At this temple, you will only see three natural rock formations called the Pindies that are symbolic of the deity’s three forms Maha Kali, Mata Saraswati and Maha Lakshmi. After offering prayers at the main temple, you must not forget to visit the Bhairon Temple that is about 2 km away, perched atop a hill. It is said that the pilgrimage is incomplete without visiting the Bhairon Temple.

Thousands of devotees visit this shrine every year. They have to undertake a trek of about 12 km from the base camp in Katra to reach the main Vaishno Devi Temple. For the convenience of elderly, unwell and physically unfit devotees, horses, ponies and palanquin services are available. Besides, you can also book helicopter to reach the temple. Note that photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple.
