Described as the Jewel Box of the state, Manipur Zoological Garden is home to about 400 common and rare species of animals and birds. It was established on 2nd October, 1976 and since then it has given shelter to endangered species, many of which are included in the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

The surroundings of Manipur Zoological Garden are marked by dense forest and hillocks. It sprawls over a large area of about 8 hectares and provides shelter to Eld's Deer, also called Thamin, which are endemic to this region. Besides, Slow Loris, Himalayan Bear, Python, Hoolock Gibbon, Flying Squirrel and Leopard Cat are other animals that can be seen here.

This garden is also home to a rare bird species called Nongin. The Forest Department, with the support of state authorities, has been able to conserve this almost extinct bird.
