Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the northeast region of India. The name Loktak is derived from two words - 'Lok' meaning stream and 'Tak' meaning end. With many small and big islands floating on the surface, it is considered to be the only floating lake in the world.

The formation of the islands, which are also called 'Phumdis', is the result of the accumulation of heterogeneous masses of organic matter, vegetation and other plantations. Measuring around 280 sq km in surface area, the lake mainly comprises open water and marshy land.

Visitors can indulge in an array of water sports such as windsurfing, sail boating and water skiing. They can rent a boat, paddle it through the large stream and explore the archipelago. This place is mesmeric and worth a visit for all tourists coming to the beautiful state of Manipur.
