Located in the west of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is the magnificently built chapel of St. Catherine. It was built by Alfansode Albuquerque in 1510 when he defeated the local Muslim ruler Adil Shah on St. Catherine’s Day i.e. November 25, 1510. The chapel is not functioning now, but marks the beginning of the Portuguese rule in India.
