Gurudongmar Lake is a high-altitude water body, perched at an elevation of around 17800 feet in Sikkim. Owing to its altitude, it is counted amongst the highest lakes across the globe. Encompassed by snow-clad mountains, this slightly milky and emerald lake impresses visitors with its breathtaking environs.

The lake attributes its name to Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Dongmar) and has an interesting legend associated with it. As this lake remains frozen for most parts of the year, the natives were unable to utilise its water in the past.

While Guru Padmasambhava was passing through the region, they approached him and pleaded to look into the matter. It is said that he touched a small part of the lake, which has never frozen since then. This legend has lent a sacred status to the lake amongst Buddhists and Hindus, who carry its water in vials.
