Area geography

Gangtok is located at a height of 5,800 feet in the lower hills of Himalayas. While the east is adorned by the beautiful waters of River Roro Chu, if you are on the extreme west, you'll be standing on the banks of River Ranikhola. Both the rivers flow southward and merge into the mighty Teesta. Gangtok is verdant, and is surrounded by dense forests of oak, poplar, birch, elm, evergreen, and coniferous trees. The city is known for its orchids and the rarest of them are sometimes featured in the city’s flower shows.

Cellular service for tourists

Cellphones are not a problem in Gangtok. All major service providers like Airtel, Vodafone, and Tata Docomo are here with inexpensive national roaming tariffs. There’s no need to buy a local SIM card when in Gangtok.

Wifi internet

Gangtok now has incredible 3G connectivity. Change your mobile phone settings to run internet while on roaming and enjoy superfast browsing speed. Check with your service provider beforehand for applicable charges. Wi-Fi connectivity is available at select hotels only and depending upon your room plan, it might be chargeable or free of cost. You'll need to check with your hotel for this.

Drinking laws

Drinking and smoking is not allowed in Gangtok for anyone under the age of 21. And yes, talking of drinking, do not forget to gulp down a glass or two of chhang, the local brew.

Tipping

Ten percent of the bill as tip at a fine dining restaurant is sufficient. Room service boys can be paid a few tenners for their service. Tipping is not expected in Gangtok, but you can pay a bellboy or a waiter, if you like their way of offering hospitality.

Safety

Sikkim is one of the safest places for both Indian travellers and foreigners alike. Crime rate is extremely low here. However, do not flash valuables like cameras and jewellery in the open. Try not to invite unwanted attention.
