Akshardham in Gandhinagar is one of the largest shrines in the state of Gujarat. This temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan - founder of the Swaminarayan Faith. This grand temple houses 1.2 tonne gold plated, 7 feet tall idol of Lord Swaminarayan that is one the main highlights of the shrine. The statue shows the lord in a seated position with His right hand in abhay mudra. Visitors can also see idols of Swami Gunatitanand and Swami Gopalanand, on the right and left side of the main statue, respectively. Swami Gunatitanand and Swami Gopalanand were His faithful disciples.

Sprawling over a large area of about 23 acres, this 108 feet tall temple is dexterously carved out of pink sandstone. It required almost 6000 tonnes of sandstone to build this architectural marvel. The shrine stands on 7 carved pillars and features 210 single stone beams, 8 zarokhas, 57 window grills and domes.

There are three halls in this temple that have their own religious and cultural significance. The Sahajanand Hall (Hall No. 1) portrays the life of Lord Swaminarayan. Sat-Chit-Anand Hall (Hall No. 2) shows a film called Mystic India, which narrates a child’s journey through the heart and soul of the country. The movie was directed by Keith Melton, a prominent director of IMAX Movies. At the Nityanand Hall (Hall No. 3), visitors can see dioramas and figures exhibiting messages from the Upanishads and Hindu epics - Ramayana and Mahabharata. Visitors must not miss the famous Sat-Chit-Anand Show that portrays tale of Nachiketa from the Katha Upanishad. Besides, the premises of the temple serve as an ideal venue for hosting cultural and religious programmes.
