Standing behind the India Gate, the Canopy is a red sandstone structure constructed by British architect Edwin Lutyens. The construction of this structure was inspired by a 6th century Mahabalipuram Pavilion in South India. Until Independence in 1947 the pavilion contained the statue of King George the Fifth, but that was later removed and can now be found in the Coronation Park in another part of Delhi.
