The Shankar’s International Dolls Museum was found by political cartoonist, K.Shankar Pillai. Located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in the Children’s Book Trust Building, this museum houses the largest collection of dolls in Delhi.

Spread over an area of 5,184.5sq ft, the Shankar’s International Dolls Museum houses a varied collection of dolls from around the world. This museum was founded in 1965 by K.Shankar Pillai with one thousand dolls. Between 1965 and 1987 the number of dolls grew from thousand to five thousand, many of which were gifted to the museum.

The Shankar’s International Dolls Museum is divided into two equal parts which have over 160 glass case which are 300 metres long, attached to the walls. One section of the museum houses dolls from various European countries, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the other section displays dolls from countries in Asia, the Middle East and India. This museum has also been awarded the Golden Peacock Feather Prize at Dolls Biennale which took place in Poland in 1980. The most popular dolls in this museum remain the Samurai dolls from Japan, the Women’s Orchestra dolls from Thailand and the Kandy Pehara from Sri Lanka.

Apart from dolls from various parts of the world the Shankar’s International Dolls Museum is also home to over 150 dolls in Indian costumes. These dolls are dresses in traditional Indian wear and represent regional culture, costumes and traditions. Each doll is painstakingly crafted keeping in mind their physical attributes, costume and jewellery. The museums is also home to a doll clinic for “sick dolls” where broken or worn out dolls are fixed.

    This is a perfect place for children who will enjoy admiring the colourful dolls, while learning about Indian and international costumes and cultures.
  • Entrance Fee Rs.17 (adults), Rs.6 (children), children in a group of 20 or more will be charged a concessional rate of Rs.4 per child. The ticker counter closes at 5:30 pm.
