One of the largest museums in India, the National Museum was established on 15th August 1949 and houses artifacts ranging from pre-historic to modern pieces of art. The museum is home to over 200,000 pieces of art, Indian and international spanning 5000 years.

The National Museum is also home to the National Museum Institute of History of Arts and the Conservation and Museology (now a recognized University). One of the most popular sections of the National Museum is the Buddhist Art section which is home to some beautiful and scared relics of Lord Buddha, found in the Basti District. The museum has a rich collection which covers ancient jewellery, manuscripts, arms, armour and paintings among others.

  • Opening Closing Time 10 am to 5 pm, except Mondays and public holidays.

  • Entrance Fee Rs.10 (Indians), Rs.300 (foreigners)
