A historic landmark and an architectural marvel, the Wallajah mosque is popularly known as the Big Mosque in Chennai. Built by Muhammad Ali Walajah, the building was constructed in line with proper symmetry and is a great example of Indian, Islamic and Iranian architecture. Neither metal nor wood was used to avoid depletion in later stages.

Made of grey-coloured granite, the mosque has two minarets in the front. The grounds of the mosque are often used as a place for conducting religious and cultural functions. During the month of Ramzan and Id, the mosque is flooded with many devotees. Another special event that is grandly celebrated is Prophet’s birthday in the vast grounds of the mosque.
