Dedicated to Lord Muruga, Vadapalani Murugan Temple is almost 125 years old. It is quite popular in Chennai as many religious rites and marriage ceremonies are conducted here. Legend says that Annaswami Nayakar, an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga made a tiny thatched hut where he placed the image of the Lord. Whenever he used to pray, he used to say certain religious chants which worked as a healing therapy for ailing people and were considered auspicious in getting married and acquiring jobs.

After his death, a temple was constructed in place of the hut and since then the significance has been carried forward. The temple has beautiful carvings including the most beautiful 108 Bharatnatyam dance gestures.
