Here’s a monthly breakup of Chennai’s climatic conditions so you can plan when to go:

November to February: These months constitute the winter season in Chennai. It is considered as the best time to visit the city. The temperature during these months hovers between 20 and 25 Degree Celsius. Even during daytime, there are cool breezes from the sea which provide relief from the otherwise hot weather. This also happens to be the festive time in Chennai with Pongal celebrated in the month of January. A special Music & Dance festival is also held here in December.

March to June: These months constitute the summer season in Chennai. The climate is generally very hot and humid during these months. This is the hottest time as temperatures soar up till 40 degree Celsius and can go even beyond. You can expect good hotel deals in the city during this time. The evenings and nights are hot but the cool sea breeze does provide some relief from the arid air.

July to September: These months constitute the monsoon season in Chennai and are accompanied with heavy rainfall and strong winds. Being closely located near the sea, rains at times can be very harsh in Chennai. However, if you wish to travel during this time, make sure you carry an umbrella and a raincoat every time. The rainfall is quite less in the months of September and October and the weather during this time turns breezy with the temperature dropping down to 30 degree Celsius.
