Named after the first missionary of the Scotland Church, John Anderson, the Anderson Church is one of the most important historic buildings in Chennai. John Anderson is known for building a school in a rented house in George Town during his visit to Madras in 1837. After his death in 1855, a church was built on the same spot where the school was operational.

Situated near the Chennai central railway station, the main attraction of the church is its tall steeple which has become a prominent landmark of the Parrys corner and Madras Christian College.
