Trunks, carrybags, puches, cases, suitcases and everything else that falls into the category of bags and purses can be found at the Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam. The collection here dates back to the 16ht century. The largest museum of its kind in the world, it features over 4000 bags and purses from the Middle Ages. The museum was initially started by Hendrikje Ivo who was an antique dealer from Amstelveen. She was so fascinated with one of the handbags she purchased that collecting handbags became a passion for her. After having collected more than 3000 of them, she decided to put a part of her exclusive collection on display. The museum had a (not so) humble beginning inside two rooms of an Amstelveen villa and was gradually shifted to a magnificent house at Herengracht, Amsterdam’s most significant canal.

You will be mesmerized to see the variety and types of bags that are on display here. Over the years, it has also become a prominent fashion museum in the world featuring bags from the Middle Ages to the contemporary world. In addition to this, the museum also boasts of a special shop and café. You can explore the museum on your own or opt for a guided tour. One thing to remember is that you need to take prior appointment for a guided tour.
