Situated near the city old harbor, Het Scheepvaartmuseum National Maritime Museum is the place to know about the maritime history of the region. The building of the museum was recently renovated but dates back to 1656 and is built on an artificial island in the Amsterdam harbour. Life-size and miniature ship models, documents, photographs and various kinds of displays about how the region was dependent on the sea route can be found at this museum. You can spend hours at the museum exploring the various maritime artifacts without even realizing so.
