Akal Takht serves as one of the five seats of Sikh religious authority. Akal which means the ‘Timeless One’ while Takht means ‘the throne’. Translated, Akal Takht means the ‘Throne of the Immortal’. It is also the central altar for the Sikh political assembly. Shri Guru Hargobind Singh laid the foundation stone of the Akal Takht building in 1605.

The building faces the Darshini Deorhi, which leads to the Golden Temple. Originally the Akal Takht was just 3.5 metres higher from the ground. Today, it’s a 5 storey building with gold leafed dome.
