There are quite a few resorts in and the surrounding areas of Masinagudi. Some of the resorts are downright simple budget resorts with just rooms & meals as offering, while others offer luxurious facilities like swimming pool and Jacuzzi in addition to accommodation/meals.
So for a visitor, the challenge is to wade through the tons of information & choose the resort that best fits his/her budget & comfort-levels. Often, this can be quite confusing as online material describing the resorts tends to exaggerate, while going through outspoken agents have similar pit-falls.
One among them is the "Jungle Trailz" resort. But what differentiates this from the numerous others in the vicinity, is the value-for-money & safety. Situated at Achakarai, a few kilometers from Masinagudi town, the resort with its rustic look is quite charming and at the same time has the requisite facilities to make it a comfortable and memorable stay.
The rooms are well kept, very tidy & spacious enough to comfortably accommodate a small family of four members without being claustrophobic.
The meals/snacks offered (separately charged) are average but hygienic and is a typical combination of South Indian fare. But what surprised me was the lack of variety and the refusal to make evening snacks.
The other facilities offered by the resort are Camp-fire & Jungle safari (separately charged), indoor and out-door games, etc.
Though the resort staff & management are quite friendly and are ever-helpful, what could make this an even better experience for the guests would be the "customer-service" touch. At the moment, the resort operations are run by an experienced member of the staff, so the holistic resort experience is missing.
There are some subtle touches that a professional resort-manager can provide to enhance the experience - like good sign-boards leading to the resort, with the guests regarding facilities/food, welcome drink, latterly food/snacks arrangements, a few hammocks to relax, wildlife related books to read and wildlife pictures for ambience, offering paid-services for intervening walks/tours with a naturalist, Tribal interaction, offer of Ooty tour (Ooty is just 30 kms from Masinagudi),
A word of caution: Please do not fall prey to offers of main-road, forest or night safaris from touts or shady operators. You will find these touts in hoards right at the entrance to Masinagudi town (near the forest check-post), making tall promises of wildlife safari and sure-shot sightings - and they do not let you pass unless you pull over to haggle with them.
Most of these touts operate illegally without permission/license to enter the forest zone and are not equipped to handle wildlife situations. If you are caught by the forest department venturing into the reserve illegally, the likely fine for the offense ranges from 5k to 50k!

It's not at all good for family, since there is nothing to do there except sleep and food also OK.
It's like a village nearby with so many resorts in this area. It's better to avoid this area if you want any relaxation time with and family. It good for hangover and sleep
The time we were the only family staying there and all other we're empty.

What this place has to offer is the location as you feel, almost, that you are in the wilderness. We were there during a full moon so it was magical. The guy the place uses for 'safari' was great as he is completely enthusiastic about wildlife and he showed us his stunning pics and videos - we would recommend the 'road safari' and give the Park bus safari a miss .. Otherwise we relaxed and read books.
As half our group cannot eat chilli the food was adjusted but still tasty for everyone else and it helped my elderly mother better appreciate Indian food. Staff were helpful and fairly accommodating.
The downs sides to the place was the cleanliness and sheer basic-ness of the accommodation. Sheets, pillows and covers were filthy. We got the pillow cases changed but they constantly ignored our request for clean sheets. It was the night after new year. We were told they had over 40 guests so I guess they just ran out of bedding and just didn't bother changing it for us. The showers were nice and hot with ample water but a bit annoying that the bathroom became full of water after a shower as there is no tray or curtain - not good for my elderly parent who was afraid of slipping.
And finding it was a nightmare as there are no signs and when we stopped to ask no one had heard of it.

Verandah with a View

Been there before and chose for the charme and quietness of the place with its perfect view across the bushland into the mountain. Plus they give you personal attention and good food. Found it really good value for money in the Masinagudi area. However, don't expect anything fancy or activities. They perfectly help you organise whatever you've replant.
Good for a group long weekend outing. The room (log house) is clean and has a beautiful view.
The package includes three times meal. Its fixed veg meal but they provide non veg on request (need to order in advance) There is facility for late night bonfire near the house.
