Profile Tucked away in one of the streets off the main road, Eswaran Koil Street plays host to one such priceless treasure. Esparan Heritage is a 16 room heritage hotel, preserving Pondicherrys own unique Indo-French Heritage. A typical colonial styled building with South Indian styled central courtyards that pierce through the building and reach out to sunshine. The Tamil streets of Pondicherry are typically recognized by their tiled lean-to verandas (thalvarams) and thinnais. Esparan Heritage showcases a synthesis of these two styles resulting in a unique Franco-Tamil" architectural identity.
The thinnai marks the sensitive transition space, leading in through a finely carved wooden door that opens out to a burst of sunshine through the mutram (a colonnaded, courtyard), one of many, that facilitate natural light to seep through. Simply carved single log pillars with stone cornices edge you through Indian heritage, even as you are timed in unison by the quintessential French arches, on one side. Ethnic artefacts around echo the Indian culture and Heritage as wooden beams beat a consistent rhythm. Smooth with a textured, handmade look, red oxide floors contrast with the smooth white walls, with subtle burst of color from handmade original Tanjore paintings reiterate the Indo-French confluence that perforates Pondicherry. Gently sloped stairways lead up to simple stark classic guest rooms that reiterate the Indo French duality from high four post beds done up in crisp white sheets, smooth yellow and green floors, wooden knit chairs and an antique wooden cupboard.
The clothes stand is an evocative reminder of Indo colonial legacy and yet again you bounce back into reality when you see the LED television tacked on the wall. The quaint bathrooms echo the architectural heritage and yet modern in facilities. The suite rooms have a beautiful four post bed and a beautiful long balcony with tiled overhangs that reminds of a time past. The balcony overlooks the long narrow street that leads out to the main road. All the guestrooms overlook yet another courtyard that has a green area and warm stone benches to catch up on that book you have always wanted to read. Accommodation 16 rooms traditional heritage hotel in an 18th Century mansion.
