Baffled at the high reviews

Massively over priced for what it is - a run down building that was no doubt very beautiful in its day but now suffers from neglect both in terms of maintenance and the attitude of its staff (who genuinely seem to wander around with an attitude of "why did i bother to get up today?"). Even the basics such as check in, check out and breakfast they treat with a surly indifference (including blanking my wife and looking to me repeatedly despite her being the person who booked, paid and had the keys in her hand). Hire sled? Rolls eyes, huffs and puffs. Get coffee? grunts and groans Checking out? 15 minutes to do the basics and the afore mentioned casual sexism. Add to that the prevalent 60-packs a day cigarette smell that permeates rooms and common areas and you've basically just paid for : - a nice view - some cats - a room so basic, worn and dirty that it makes any chain hotel or hostel look luxurious by comparison - really poor service at the end of the day its your money but the value proposition just doesn't add up unless you REALLY like nice views but basically are happy to sleep in the equivalent of a dorm room. if however (like me) you thought this would be a quaint retro hotel and a bit of a treat then you're probably about 60 years too late - any charm this place once had has since been eroded by years of neglect and indifference (likely borne from an arrogance of having such a nice location and believing no effort was needed beyond that). a real shame as there's plenty of potential but I'd recommend simply visiting the grounds , maybe having some food (i didnt try the restaurant - just had breakfast - so it might be nice?) or enjoy the sled run. staying overnight? not worth what's charged by any metric.

Does historical mean run down?

My husband invited me and our 3 adult children to Art on Ice in Davos. He booked us into the Schatzalp thinking it would be an interesting experience. The Location is fantastic, the service good, the breakfast buffet also good and the food in the Panorama restaurant was excellent but the hotel itself was a disappointment. He booked us into two nostalgic rooms. The room the kids got without a balcony was large and looked to have been recently renovated but our room was such a disappointment. The bed for two adults was only 160cm (French sized) and the mattress has seen better days. I kept rolling down to the center of the bed which was not helpful in getting a good nights sleep. The bathroom was just large enough for one person to stand but not move and I would not call it nostalgic— it was covered in orange brown ceramic tiles(which is so 1970-80’s). The shower was so tiny we did not even use it. It was interesting seeing the turn of the century hotel but does nostalgic have to mean run down? I loved the old elevators and the sitting area. Unfortunately smoking is allowed in the adjacent bar and you could smell it into the lounge sitting area.

Wonderful historic place

We very much enjoyed our five-night stay at this hotel. It is far from perfect, yet that makes it endearing ;) Knowing about its past helps make up for all the small things that one might complain about in other places. As already mentioned by others, it is difficult to know what room one is going to get (no price list nor room photos on internet). Prices suddenly go up at certain periods (e.g., Spengler Cup, unbeknown to us) so one should really take time to figure our when to go and what room to book (phone call or e-mail). We ended up in a very small room, with an outdated, tiny, orange-colored bathroom. But the view (to the south) and common spaces more than made up for the room. Having a half board is a good option, for food is very tasty and the dining room almost grand. The lobby / lounge area is very enjoyable and the pianist made it even nicer. The only problem is that smoking is allowed in the bar and it spreads all over ... thus we didn't frequent this area as often as we would have liked. Why not make one room into a fumoir and close it off from the rest of common spaces? When we arrived at the hotel (just before Christmas), we heard from several employees that it was their first day, thus they didn't know about several things we asked about ... With a bit more loving care many things could be improved. Although it is a bit complicated to get to the hotel if coming by car, this relative isolation makes the place very attractive. It is quiet and the skiing area next to it is very nice, not as crowded as elsewhere and free of charge for hotel guests. Sledging down into Davos is great!

We booked Schatzalp because of its cult status, but didn't know what to expect in terms of food, service, skiing etc. We could not have been more pleasantly surprised! The hotel has kept its iconic charm, with an elegant dining room, old-school lifts and vintage furniture. Our rooms had lovely large balconies to enjoy the stunning view, which can also be admired from the "snow beach" (which is in itself very photogenic). We joined a tour where we found out more about the hotel's previous existence as a sanatorium, and in the evening we enjoyed screenings of movies that were filmed in the hotel. We had half board, which included breakfast and a 5-course dinner. The dinner in particular was always delicious and to a high standard, with a great choice of meat, fish and vegetarian meals for the main. Well worth the price, both in terms of quality and quantity. A truly unique feature of the hotel is that while it's away from the noise of the city, it has its own ski slopes, sledding track and walking trails - more than enough to keep you active and occupied during your stay. All of this is entirely free for hotel guests! There are also other restaurants on the slopes/trails so you don't have to go all the way back to the main hotel - we tried the Strela Alp cabin and were very impressed. The one word of warning I'd give is that there seems to be quite a big difference between rooms - both in terms of size and standard. As the different options aren't listed online, it's hard to know whether you're booking a more modest or luxurious room - we wrongly assumed there wouldn't be a big difference. I'd take some extra time to make sure you have the kind of room you want when making the booking. Yes, there is some visible wear and tear, and some things don't flow as smoothly as they should. But Schatzalp is so charming that even these imperfections can seem endearing - after all, it's hard not to love a hotel that has not one but three resident cats to greet you at reception.

Timelss charm in a unique plac....

We have been guests at the Schatzalp on 3 different occasions. We love its charm, location, view, historic feeling, sorroundings, and friendly service. Management is approachable and welcoming. The spacious, well fournished and luminous Art Nouveau lounge area has an amazing view! It is not a luxurious hotel, which in fact is part of its charm and authenticity. Nevertheless, it is an expensive hotel. And there are improvements to be made: some of the bedrooms are particularly outdated (for example, very old and dirty carpets, shower curtain, lack of storage), the entrance lobby could also be renovated while keeping original charm, the menus at the lounge and restaurant could have more simple options added (and less pricey). I find it outrageous to pay CHF 8 for a bottle of water (tap water) at the restaurant and CHF 6 for a 50cl water. Tap water is offered at all restaurants in Switzerland for free. Presentation of breakfast items could also be more appealing. At breakfast peak moments the service can be quite slow. All in all it is a place worth staying at. It has a special magic which is difficut to find elsewhere!
