Stately Old Hotel/Home with Ba....
Our room was on the third floor with a great view of the canal. The room was cavernous with 12 foot high ceilings. The furnishing were in OK shape, but dated. The bathroom was updated. The beds were comfortable.
Now the bad news: No elevator to upper floors. Had to drag luggage up to third floor. Breakfast was not included in room rate and below average for a hotel room in St Petersburg costing 5500 rubles ($100 US) per night. Our room was on city hot water and we had brown colored hot water coming out of the faucets from the second day until we left 3 days later. Manager said it was city water causing the problem. Spoke to a few businesses in the area and they said brown colored hot water is common in the old section of St Petersburg. Found out some rooms in the hotel have city hot water(brown) and some have dedicated hot water boiler(clean). Had to sponge bath with baby wipes or go to the building next door for a shower. Not pleasant at all. Do not rent a room in this hotel unless it has its own hot water system!!!! Get it in writing before booking.

Best to avoid
I had a pretty horrible experience and I would not recommend this place. It was not expensive but I would have rather paid more than go through all this. It almost spoiled my enjoyment of the trip. The building is rather old and has not been renovated. The interiors are old but not in the sense of old fashioned only, in the sense of just needing an urgent refurbishment! No facilities whatsoever in the room, an old TV from 30 years ago at least, no cable, not even a hot water boiler. But there were cups, one wonders why.
The worst - my room was cold upon arrival, the heating wasn't working and there was no hot water the first night. Later, it turned out you just needed to let the water run until a few gallons were gone so that it starts heating up. They tried to fix the heating only to arrive the second day at night and to discover that it was leaking! Water was coming out of the radiator full speed!!! The morning I signalled to the reception but they thought the bath had leaked (which it did!) and just put the curtains down without fixing the heating. I arrived in the evening and found it leaking still and the whole room was soaked and smelled like mold!!! Then they finally moved me to the room next door which was slightly better but also old. The whole place was very worn out and spooky and it felt like I was the only poor guest.
On a positive note, two of the staff were really nice, kind, good looking and sweet, the third though was unpleasant and after all the above dared to look annoyed when relocating me. The boss whom I saw briefly didn't seem nice either.

Perfect location for a music l....
I stayed in St. Petersburg for two days to see some opera at the Mariinsky Theatre, and for this purpose History Hotel is perfect. It takes three minutes to walk to the old Mariinka, four minutes to the new opera theatre, and ten minutes to the new Mariinsky concert hall. Rooms are spacious and high, there is free wifi, and breakfast is included. The lack of elevators means that elderly or overweight people, or anyone with bad knees will have hard time navigating the staircases and corridors. If you are a healthy, young culture lover and enjoy an old fashioned palace interior, this hotel is for you.

Good choice for opera visitor
History Hotel on the Griboedova Channel, St.Petersburg: Short distance from Mariinsky Theater 8300-400 metres). From my point of view this is the best attribute of the hotel. Friendly young professionals at the reception with satisfactory/some skills in English. Standard room number 14: nice, clean, economical. This room was in backyard. Probably more "luxurious" rooms available for higher price. Adequate WLAN. Good breakfast. Quiet and peaceful (due to few hotel guests? in the end of November). I would choose this hotel in the future if my trip would include Mariinsky Opera performances.
