We had a lovely, secluded apartment next to the swimming pool. Decorated in English cottage style, it had everything we wanted and needed: comfort, style and privacy. Breakfast at the 'big house' was an event.

A beautiful, quiet lodge in a ....
We stayed in mid-April when weather was still cool. On arrival, we were embraced by the lush, decades-, if not centuries-old garden anchored by magnificent Eucalyptus trees that filled the space with their fragrance. The owner, Jose, a charming and most cultured man, welcomed us and his caring staff immediately attended to our needs and expectations for the stay. The apartment where we lodged was private, secluded and surrounded by the natural beauty of the gardens. We enjoyed the rooftop terrace for afternoon drinks and quiet times; the fireplace on a cold, rainy afternoon and the comfort of spaciousness and good disposition of the living spaces; a most welcome change after a couple of weeks in smaller rooms. The location is ideal, 10 min. walk to the nearest white-sand beach and 30 min. walk to the te center of the beautiful town of Caminha, such that a car (which we had for part of our stay) is nice but not indispensable, and significantly, we thought the "beauty to price" ratio was extremely favorable. Net, we spent, we spent 6 relaxing, happy and carefree days at Casa Esteiro, would gladly return to it and happily recommend it.

Caught in a time wharp
My wife, 2-year-old daughter and I booked eleven days at Casa de Esteiró, attracted by the quirky charme of the photos on google images. And we were not disappointed. This is a very special, caught-in-a-time-warp kind of place, enchanting and lovely. We stayed in a spaceous apartment with a terrace overlooking the (very usable) pool. My daughter loved the gardens, the romantic coy pond, our bike tours (even a child seat was provided) through the pine forest connecting river and sea beaches, the wonderful staff (and Filomeina in particular!). We loved the unique atmosphere, stunning rooms and environs with art and tasteful antiques that reflect the life and spirit of Jose, or Mr. Ambassador, as he is respectfully called by his people. This place may not have the mod cons of a five-star hotel, and it doesn’t aspire to. But it exudes authentic style. For us it was the perfect refuge to unwind and forget our everyday lives.

Excellent three-day stay at th....
We had a very nice three-day stay here in April. The property is a former hunting lodge in a secluded location, walking distance to the town but also near the beach.
Very nice breakfast in the main house, which has a real old-world charm, it feels like taking a step back in time to the era of the country gentleman. Breakfast includes eggs, toast, jam, juice, coffee. Some fresh fruit would be a nice addition.
Attractive suites, big enough for a family or a couple. We enjoyed preparing a few meals in the kitchen.
Great hospitality from the host, Jose, a former diplomat who speaks perfect English. He seems to really enjoy meeting and talking to visitors. He even gave us a lift to the station when we departed.
The staff were also really good, especially Mena who who went out of her way to help us with a few things.
There are a few nice portuguese-style coffee shops on the main square.
There are lots of places to walk to in the surrounding area. You can also go on a day excursion to Spain, just a short ferry hop over the river. Unfortunately the ferry service seems to be a bit irregular in the off-season and tended to stop early in the day so we didn't make it over.
We would definitely go back to Casa de Esteiro if we have the chance to.

Unconfortable and unkempt
Stayed in the studio for 5 days and it was a total disappointment. Based on the house's website we were expecting charm and comfort but didn't find either.
The studio had 2 beds with very worn out mattresses which were uncomfortable and smelly. To eat, we had only an old gambling table with a broken leg and two benches. Never mind the outside table because it was dirty and full of spider webs. Everything else on the studio was old and dusty.
On the outside, the spaces that probably once were pleasant to sit and have a picnic on were now invaded by plants and dirt. None of the plants on the gardens/wood were taken care of. The access to the studio itself was made by a narrow track, on which was difficult to walk, even more carrying luggage.
Breakfast was just OK and, although the staff provided what we asked for, they didn't seem pleased to receive guests and we didn't feel welcome inside the main house.
Overall, it seems like a place with a lot of potential to be a small charming inn close to the beach, but it needs serious attention and renovation, besides more welcoming hosts.
