Charming Country Hotel

My husband and I wanted a romantic, Tuscan experience, which is exactly what you can find at this little country hotel. It is truly out in the country side, about 10 min from Radda, 1.5 hours from Florence and 45 min from Sienna. It is a beautiful converted mill from the 1400's and was delightfully charming. The staff was very attentive, I sent many email correspondence before our stay regarding setting up tours, cooking class, wineries to visit etc and each email was replied to promptly (within 12-24 hours). We stayed in a large room with private patio, though did not make use of it, since most of our time was spent touring Tuscany. It was very warm during the day and cool at night, though it did get stuffy in the rooms and I wish the AC had been working - we had to leave our windows open at night for air flow, but there were no screens on the windows and people were often smoking in the garden below and you could smell the smoke in our room. The other downside, was that we did not think the food in the restaurant was up to Tuscany standards and were disappointed by this. Though the breakfast each morning was terrific and the staff very accommodating when we had an early check-out and offered to prepare us breakfast before we left. Overall, if you're looking for a quite, remote, Tuscan retreat, this was lovely, but you may want to make other arrangements for dinner. On a side note, we did arrange a cooking class though the hotel, at their "sister" hotel in Radda (Palazzo Leopoldo) and this was the highlight of our entire trip. The cooking class with Lorenzo was just amazing! It is a hybrid of a cooking demonstration and hands-on class - my husband and I signed up for the class through our hotel and were joined by 3 other couples. We were all eager to be involved and Lorenzo let us do a lot of hands-on prep. We made delicious lemon almond biscotti, spinach/ricotta ravioli (we made the pasta from scratch and hand-filled each ravioli, the highlight of the class!), pork tenderloin in red wine sauce and tomatoes filled with a wonderful basil pesto that was later combined with a selection of cured meets, cheese, and savory jams for a hearty appetizer. We prepped and cooked for 3+ hours (though the time flew by with Lorenzo's stories, humor and instruction) and then had a leisurely meal, the most delicious meal we had in Italy, with plenty of wine to go around! There is nothing like making a home-cooked meal, with fresh ingredients (many from Lorenzo's own garden) when visiting Tuscany!

Beautiful hotel tucked away in....

We stayed at the Ultimo Mulino for five nights. What a lovely place, though you will need a good sat nav to find it, and a car is essential for getting around! The hotel is a converted mill, very tastefully done, with lovely rooms and public areas. The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, particularly Alesso who doubles as receptionist and part time waiter in the evenings, and is always keen to give information about the hotel or places to visit. We would definitely recommend this hotel!

Relaxing stay

My wife, eight year old son and I stayed here on Tuesday 29 August 2017. We were in the area to see Siena but chose to stay outside the city. This looked ideal. It was about half an hour's drive from Siena and totally off the beaten track. What a find! Check in was quick and we were made to feel welcome. Note that the car park is set back (approx. 70-80m) from the hotel, so if you are travelling with heavy, or a lot of luggage, I would recommend you drive up to the entrance, unload there and then drive back to the car park. We stayed in a family room (Room No. 8) on the 1st Floor. You could access the room internally via a steep staircase or externally up a ramp to aid the transport of luggage. The room had been well maintained and was fully of rustic character. It was a little on the small side, but sufficient for our needs. The window looked out on to a secluded garden. Although the main road was nearby, there was very little noise. The room had a tv, electronic safe, tv, complimentary wifi - a must in the area if you need the internet. We had a lovely continental breakfast in the courtyard in the morning. The chef also offered to cook eggs. We made use of the outdoor swimming pool. This was accessed from a set of steps, which led up to a secluded veranda with sun loungers and a long, narrow(ish) pool. As we were the only people using the pool on the Tuesday afternoon, it was great. If you're planning on visiting Siena but want to stay outside the city, this would be an ideal spot.

An absolute must!

We are making an extensive tour through Italy. In the Chianti region we stayed four days in L’Ultimo Mulino where we could explore all typical Chianti villages and wine estates. The hotel is exceptionally quiet, has a typical Tuscan, excellent cuisine, and is led by a young, enthousiasts management . They are very attentive and professional. An absolute must!

Not for Americans, take your $....

If your going to visit any of the nearby towns likes Sienna , Lucca or take a winery tour you might as well experience a place like this. Maybe not this exact place but some other converted farmhouse might be better. We didn't book this place ourselves it was booked by our agency as part of a larger tour. All the other 4-5 star hotels and Bnb we stayed in were home runs.. but not this one. They converted an old mill into a BnB. The outside looks very quaint, inside the rooms aren't anything special, they could use a polishing and maybe a face lift, and the air condition barely worked and their was no screen on the window so we couldn't keep it open at night. The people working there were the least friendly or likable compared to the other 4 hotels we stayed during our vacation. I got the "we don't like Americans vibe here". The food was very good, (but then again all the food in Italy is very good) although a bit overpriced but your in the middle of no where with no immediate options to eat anywhere else. The creepy thing was that all the other guests whispered during dinner.. it was way too quiet. The pool was a nice addition, again nothing special but gave you a bit of something to do other than just sit and drink wine and whisper. Thankfully we only spent a few hours each night here since we were busy touring all day. I won't go back or suggest that any Americans stay there, we kind of felt unwanted by the staff. Maybe they don't like Americans, maybe they just don't like fat guys. I don't know. Thank God we met a nice Australian couple we had fun with for a few hours who we were able to converse with at our normal adult outside voices. The one thing that didn't disappoint me about this place was if you like a nice big steak this is the right place for you eat dinner at their restaurant other than that I give this place a C- overall. That being said Tuscany was so great that this little hiccup didn't ruin our visit. I highly recommend Americans visit this region.
