Right next to the pedestrian zone of the city centre of Essen, close to all the big banking houses and a 3 minutes walk away from the main railway station is the Petul Apart Hotel City Premium. The booking was easily made by phone without any hassle at all, the check-in was also absolutely easy and effortless. The medium size (there are normal rooms, medium and large size apartments) apartment was nicely and tastefully furnished (soft colors, lots of light and friendly wooden details), meticulously clean, with a view over a parking lot. There was a little kitchenette with everything necessary to prepare a simple meal or a breakfast, the bathroom was spacious enough and the bed was big enough for two grown-ups without being cramped at all. The living room area was also pleasantly cut. The internet was fast and without any problems.
Why only four and not five points? At night the room was lit by a lamp in the back yard and it was not possible to shield off the light, which can be a nuisance for light sensitive sleepers. Otherwise the stay in the Petul Apart Hotel City Premium is worth every single Euro....

Large room (small appartment),....
It's a self service hotel, no reception desk, but phone support and a key locker. Very easy.
Location is great, just a few minute walk to the city center with lots of shops and places to eat/drink.
The room looked clean, but when my black shirt fell behind a chair it was gray when I picked it up... Better vacuuming next time!

Luxury and spacious apartment
The apartment was spacious, with a large bed and huge square pillows; you need to fold them in order to be able to sleep. Next to the main pedestrian area and within few minutes walk from the main train station.
We arrived at Essen late at night and had confirmed the booking two days ago and asked for any details concerning payment. No special info was given from the hotel. We arrived only to find that the apartments do not have a reception area and only had a distance connection to the reception of the sister hotel, which was a 15 min drive from there. They refused to let us enter the apartments, unless we paid for all the stay. We had to take a taxi drive us to the sister hotel, and drive us back, and when we asked for a refund for the taxi because nobody ever informed us for this, we were told to take a taxi drive us there the next morning and give the receipt to request the refund.
Other than that - which was clearly the fault of the receptionist who answered our call when we wanted to confirm the booking - the hotel and the stay was great.

Unique, good apartment/Hotel i....
Hotel: I am wondering if it's a hotel or an apartment. The name of the place says it all it's a ApartHotel :).
Price: Price is good for the center of town. Not too expensive, but also not the cheapest around.
Room: The room is spacious, got good beds and looks nice. I really liked it. It even has it's own small kitchen with a microwave.
bathroom: It's not too big but contains a unique shower (see picture) The lighting is a bit low but overall it looked good!
Services: Here comes the unique part. you call them at the entrance and state your name. They will open up the door and when inside you need to give them another call to get your key. Everything is automated and remotely done. Liked the new approach. They should apply this to other hotels :).
neighborhood: Really close to the center of town, ideally situated with a 5 min walk. There is a parking garage across the street.
Overall: Would recommend the place, quiet, free wifi, clean and spacious. A really good place for not too much money!

A surprise on a couple of levels all good but one I won't share that will spoil it.
The pleasant surprise was how spacious the room was it is a basic apartment and can massively vary in price I paid c.90 euros but recently saw it on for c.290 euro I would never pay that not even for the pleasant surprise (in the bath room) it's not worth it.
It is also a boarder line apartment it does have a kitchenette but must be the smallest in the world. Its kind of built in to the cupboards and is basically a microwave!! It's not the greatest.
The check in is all done electronically and over a intercom and phone which is cool and never seen before and it worked seamless for me. It means there are no staff onsite but they are on the other end of the phone if you need them although not sure how it would work if you had a problem and required immediate action (guess it wouldn't be immediate)! There is free wifi.
I'd stay again for the right price and for a family staying in the city it would work and I image some are bigger than the one I stayed in. Although my room would be ample for a family with two you children for a long weekend with a sofa bed.
But please don't pay too much. It's a little set back from the city centre and the walk could be a little scary as there is a lot of building work and waste land at the moment and it's kind of down a random street but I have walked it and I'm not the scariest person in the world.
