Good location for train travel....
Just outside the "Sortie Rhone" exit of Lyon Part Dieux station so for one short overnight is fine. Reception is one level up. Ground floor entrance has small elevator to use and here I had pickpocket attempt when it was full - possibly typical of rail station territory.
Hotel staff were friendly, room and bath clean, everything basic. Breakfast could be Continental E5 or buffet E9. in room off reception. Some café/snack/restaurants across the main court by station entrance. Very busy area but rooms were very quiet even though right on the street.

We only had a one night stay in Lyon and chose the Hotel Athena purely because it was cheap and central, The room was immaculately clean and well maintained.
Breakfast was nice and filling and the staff were all friendly.

The hotel is immediately on the square outside of the Station (follow the sign for Boulevard Marius Vivier-Merie) and is a short walk. To enter you have to go in a lift to Reception. The staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. My room overlooked the square and I had a small balcony on which you could just about fit a chair.
My room was fine, clean and had enough space in it and the bathroom was very good. If I had one slightly negative comment, it would be that the room was in need of a little TLC.
There is a restaurant (on the same floor as Reception) where breakfast is served. I did not, however, use it but not because I had a problem with it.
WiFi is available for free but you can only use one item on it at a time. I did find that, although it picked up the WiFi, I had to log on to it each time.
If you have your window open (which I did), the square can be noisy for a while late in the evening and there is a sound of wheels on the cobbled surface for much of the day and night.
If it is your first visit, I would say that this is worth a try. It is so easy to find and no problems getting to and from the station.
The station square is well served by buses and trams which mean that you can travel over most of the city.

too expensive , in poor condit....
Needed an overnight stop at the station. Glad it was only one night. The position good, the room we had had a clean and seemingly refurbed shower room and a standard double bed with clean sheets. That's it though, the corridors and public areas including the lifts are tired and unkempt, carpets shabby, false ceilings water stained and in need of repair, bulbs missing , fitting loose. The breakfast was meagre though serving staff pleasant unlike reception who were evasive and brusque when queried about the lack of air - con that was advertised but not available. Suggest close and start again.

Not What You Expect
We got the room that was totally different from what we had in mind, to say it nicely. It was small and needing housekeeper's attention, and the view out the window? What view? It was a closed balcony with an air conditioning unit and with a blinding sign that intermittently spells the hotel's name. You can close the window so you won't hear the traffic noise and a blackout curtain to not see the blinking sign. Above your eye level you can see some hotels. Very slow wi-fi. Breakfast was not that good, maybe walk across the street at the mall for a better deal. All in all, we didn't enjoy our two-night stay. The next door hotel is much better...and I really regret choosing this one.
