Nothing Chicago nor internatio....
Had to do a quick 3 day business trip to Shenzhen and made the mistake of letting my young inexperienced colleague to book a hotel using Agoda. What you see in the pictures is NOTHING short of the poor condition of the hotel. The furniture is dirty and old and the fittings are falling apart. Worse still, while Agoda said hotel has been prepaid, the front desk said it was not. I foolishly swiped my credit card as we wanted to get out of the hotel and my credit card was hacked! We stayed one night, lost the non cancellation booking. International travllers who can accept business travel types of hotels like Best Western - this hotel is not half that standard.

You get what you pay for
We were looking for a room for myself, wife and 2 teen daughters and this one kept coming up on the list with decent reviews. So I booked a suite for 3 nights. Well the size is nice, decent bedrooms, large living room and bathroom. We even got a balcony with a washing machine.
So those are facts. Now the bathroom is in rough shape, the shower leaks, the washing machine works but no spin cycle. There is a makeshift clothesline on the balcony (there were verticle wires prevent stuff from blowing off or to stop you from jumping)
The TV was a flat screen but only had Chinese stations so I thought I would use my HDMI cable and watch a movie from my tablet. But no HDMI input on the TV. I've never seen a flat screen without HDMI inputs. There was a fridge and microwave, both worked, both were dirty. We were on the 26 floor and could tell when morning came by the noise of construction on the building across the street. But my biggest complaint is probably the elevators. Three elevators, a lot more that 26 floors and only 2 elevators go to the parking garage. If you are looking for an elevator in the afternoon expect it to show up with staff and a large load of laundry. When we were checking out we finally gave up on trying to get an elevator to the parking garage as they were all showing up full of staff with laundry. I went down down without luggage, climbed over the laundry to find a spot to stand. My family too the luggage out to the curb and waited for me.
But, then again, at about $100 Canadian a night for a suite this was a good deal. So you get what you pay for.

Sweet deal on a true suite -- ....
I'm a regular at the Chicago Suites because I like the two bedroom suites on the high floors. I usually book on Ctrip for a couple of weeks at a time. Make no mistake, this is a Chinese value hotel with Chinese staff which can pose minor communication inconveniences and it's a bit long in the tooth. Don't let a little bit of poor English, shabby decor and simple furniture scare you away. It's in an excellent location close between two MTR stations, the electronics market and very close to the SEG building in the heart of Huaqiang Bei. The neighborhood is full of great little noodle places, fruit shops, a 7-11, foot massage and many small bars. NOTE: this place is not for fussy types. If you want a pricey Western experience with full service, stay at the Shangri La, Four Seasons, Hilton or Marriott for US$150/night more. If you want a great value on a longer term apartment style hotel, go native at the Chicago Suites. Strong Internet for business and a flat screen TV in the living room for your VPN streaming enjoyment. Bring your own HDMI cable or buy one for $3 bucks at the market. That said, I'm a frequent business traveler and normally stay at Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and similar brands. I can handle this with ease. Here I choose to go local for the sheer convenience, great value and experience of Huaqiang Bei. Try it. I've stayed at many of the other nearby hotels and always come back to sweet home Chicago. I saw a roach one time. I squashed it and lived to write this positive review.

Convenient to Huaqiangbei, but....
The hotel is located in a very convenient spot, very close to the HQB electronics markets and very close to the Science Museum metro stop. It's not glamorous or expensive. The entrance from Yannan Road is just a small stairway on the left side of the building. That entrance will take you to an elevator that you can get to the hotel's lobby on the 2nd floor. Otherwise, if you go in the parking lot side, there's a ramp that will take you into a commercial entrance and that elevator will take you to the hotel's rooms on higher floors. We were on the 24th floor, overlooking a building that was being worked on 24 HOURS PER DAY! Hammering, cutting, cranes moving things, at all hours of the night. I had to try to sleep with ear plugs. Not fun, but it was cheap. It wound up being around $47 USD per night. The construction is on the North side of the building. Avoid that if possible. The toilet leaked, flooded the bathroom, had a difficult time getting the point across to the main desk. They only speak Chinese.
The furnishing in the room were very dated, but otherwise clean. I was traveling with my wife and it didn't exactly make a good impression of Shenzhen on her. We spent three nights there, while she checked out Commercial City, just a few metro stops away, while I combed the electronics markets.
There's a really good Indian Restaurant called In Cafe, just around the corner. Reasonably priced and the food is terrific. It's worth checking out.
If you're traveling solo, going to the electronics markets, this is a good and inexpensive place to stay and make your home base while you're here.

Nothing to complain about exce....
This is a value for money hotel, not luxurious but very decent for sure with big rooms. The front desk service is fast, effective and polite. People keep your luggage and provide an umbrella in case of heavy rain. The rooms are big, clean and quite nice.
When I arrived it was dark and raining so finding the place is not so easy, but manageable. The most puzzling thing is the entrance to the hotel. It is a bit tricky to find it if you don't speak Chinese so do the following : metro Science Museum, exit B, go to Yan An road, on the left side of the road (same side of the McDonald), about 150 m from the Metro you see a big building with the name of the hotel if you pay attention and a small parking with barriers on Yan Nan road and a guard, enter the parking, then find the entrance of the building on the right of the parking (this building has a fast food on the street). It looks very much like an office or factory building and there is no clear indication that there is an hotel here on the parking entrance, take the elevator and go to second floor and find the hotel lobby. The place is ideally located to explore the Huaqiangbei electronics market and it is easy to find tasty restaurants around.
