Spacious rooms and good locati....
I stayed here for six nights whilst visiting Shanghai. We arrived very late at night to check in and were a little surprised when asked to pay a 5000 Renminbi deposit for the room ( around £500). Due to the language barrier, it was not properly conveyed that they would only take the deposit at this time, then we would pay for the room on departure. This caused a lot of confusion. The hotel rooms were spacious and very clean, and the shower in particular was huge. The hotel was in easy walking distance of several Tourists attractions including the Bund, Yu Garden and old Shanghai street. There was also a Starbucks, Family Mart and several restaurants across the road. On one occasion when we asked staff for help on where to find an open shop we were completely ignored, apart from this we encountered no problems.

stay their if you do not want ....
We stayed in this hotel in April 2018 having been allocated by Virgin tour operator. The decor of the hotel is good but there is where the use of this word ends for this hotel.
No one in the hotel staff speaks English, not even on the reception. All the information given to us and available in the room states that restaurants in the hotel are open until 9 PM but this is not true as when we went in at 7:55 Pm for dinner they were closed and the waitress (3 of them) informed us by signs that they were closed as if 19:00 after writing this on a napkin from the tables.
The temperature in the rooms are controlled centrally and you have no control on that in your room and as it was not yet 1st of May the heating has to be on so the room was a sauna.
If you tried to sleep in the bed you will need the Constitution of Indian poor man on a bed of nail. The mattress is so hard that the floor felt softer than the bed. So two nights sleeping in the chair which is better than the bed,
The 2nd night we went to the restaurant at 18:30 so we can have dinner but again no one can speak any other languish except Mandarin and the menu is in photos with near no explanation as to what you will get.
We ordered beef and what looked like chicken and rise. Beef was served cold out of the fridge and the chicken were Hot dish but it was chicken Feet and not chicken.

Good hotel, great location
The Riverview is an elegant older style hotel but the rooms are tidy and well equipped with anything you need. The staff are helpful. The location, five minutes walk from the Bund is great. The nearest underground station is about 10 minutes walk away.

Absolutely Horrible Staff And ....
First off, im almost positive its the culture because they treat there fellow Shanghainese absent of respect. Got a paper from the Hotel stating the check out was at "before 12pm". Didnt need it that long so i was leaving at 2:20. they tell me that check out was at 2pm and i need to pay for that half of day???? I told him now, and start pointing out the lack of decenceny, decoram and over professionalism.... i wish i spoke chinese to really lay into him...... FORGET this place! (wanted to use the other F word but this post might not be shown)

2 weeks in this hotel and it f....
2 weeks were spent In this hotel, and by the 2nd week it felt like home.. a sage and comfortable place to return too following a busy day travelling and sightseeing.. there are lots of pros and cons to staying here..
Beds are hard, but surprisingly comfortable and different pillows available on request
No river view unless on higher floors, but still a nice view out the windows
Good food in restaurant although limited menu
Fresh bottled water in rooms every day and very efficient cleaners
Lovely range of food for breakfast
A great location for the bund, river taxi, nice restaurants and Shanghai tower.. and a local Starbucks and family Mart for bits and pieces
Not a great location for the metro, but only a 20 minute walk
Surrounding markets and gardens are lovely, all walking distance
Fantastic traditional tea house and traditional Chinese shopping with lake 20 minute walk away
Lovely river cruise and bus tour 15 minutes walk away
Had a little trouble with taxis, and hotel not very helpful when it came to arranging transportation
Overall, with the good the bad and the ugly, my family had a lovely stay in this hotel, we travelled far and wide around China, and it was lovely to return tired at night, to a warm, welcoming, clean and comfy bedroom.
Would definitely stay in again if returning to China!
