Good location but average hote....
Yitel is in a good location. You can walk a few blocks and get to Nanjing Road which is full of restaurants and shops, and you can walk to People’s Square park which was pretty with cherry blossoms at the end of May (also a short walk away from the People’s Square metro station).
However, my first night was very uncomfortable. I woke up to a strong smell of smoke that did not let me sleep well. The AC was a bit hard to control too.
Room size is fine and it has good amenities such as toothbrushes, 2 comp bottles of water daily, robes, slippers, etc.
The staff barely spoke any English and there was no concierge. There isnt a restaurant on site but a cafe on the 2nd floor that also smelled like smoke.
It’s fine if you just want a place to stay, but don’t expect too much.

Very noisy and smokey!
We had a queen size room which was nicely fitted out, good size and great shower. The main issue was the noise from the street outside! The windows were not double glazed and would not close properly so you could hear everything from outside. Being a busy street there is constant noise and people beeping their horns late into the night and then from the crack of dawn. Also, the corridors stunk of smoke and the lifts. Very disappointing for what could have been a much pleasanter stay. If you value your sleep this place is not for you!

Chinese hospitality and a mana....
I came for a week work in China and was booked in this hotel by my office so that I could enjoy two weekends in Shanghai. I usually trust tripadvisor but for this hotel the mixed reviews were very misleading. First many reviews date back from 2010 and before and while there are different kind of rooms, some older and some newer, the hotel has definitely seen renovations, thus the complaint of the noise of some. But also meaning many of the complaints on some reviews are no more accurate. I first arrived in a newer room (with wood floor and not carpet) that was non-smoking. But yes i could smell smoke. It is regrettable that some tourists don't have the courage to complain at the reception because they would have learnt like me that this floor was mixed, so smoke could come from the other rooms. The staff was very understanding and moved me to another floor with a bit older rooms (with carpet) but perfectly fine. It was as simple as just asking and it is sad some would give up trying to explain themselves because of the language barrier. This hotel is mainly occupied by Chinese people and it is true that the reception staff speaks little English. But what they don't have in language skills (and sometimes they are a bit busy and shy), they compensate by a lot of patience and good will and did their best using their phone to google images or use translators to understand me. The manager Mr. James Jin was amazing, not only did he advise me on tours but he brought me to the shop and bank himself, booked my taxi and even called back a shop where I bought some tea to complain that the prices they did to me where too high. So he really took at heart to provide the only tourist of the hotel at that time with the best example of chinese hospitality and an authentic care for well being. All the staff have been helpful, they accepted to keep my luggage several days when travelling out and while this is also done in other hotels, the point here is to say that if you make the effort to ask, they are more than willing to assist in all possible ways even if it is not stated as such on arrival. But you will need to ask as it is just not a place where you will find offers for guides, tours, or tourist services which in many ways is good. So with some intercultural sensitivity and an open attitude, you will feel very welcome and cared for in this hotel. It terms of its amenities it is a very decent hotel reasonably priced for the location, everything was functional, clean and the bed sheets were washed without having the detergent smell that can become unbearable in other places. The beds are firm, which is very good for most people, but if your health require a soft bed then maybe not suitable for you. Internet was free and the location is very great close from lively street, shopping, metro, easy taxi and still a quiet place for such a location. I will definitely return and recommend it.
