Damp, smelly rooms but conveni....
Jitai Hotel is right on the intersection of Siping Road and Chifeng road, just 10 minutes walk from the Tongji subway station, Line 10; 5 minutes from Tongji University gates. The rooms are however quite clumsy. Dark, damp, and often having a strong smell of cigarettes, the room service is often below the par. However, unlike many budget hotels in Shanghai who doesn't let foreigners in, Jitai has no such restrictions and can accommodate foreigners, as well as issue legal receipts for reimbursements, if asked for. The staff are friendly, but doesn't communicate in English, so a little bit of Chinese is of help. Overall, a less than average hotel for budget travelers.
I'm not going to lie, it is a little dingy and depressing and we definitely walked past a booty call, but for £20 a night it's really quite decent - if you want the Ritz then go to the Ritz. 7 minute down the road from the tube station on a good line. Room cleaned everyday, receptionist was very helpful, spoke a bit of English and stored your bags for free on the day you checked out. Room service every day, nice bathroom, in-room wifi, great AC, freebies like 2 water bottles, toothbrush and slippers. Never made it in time for breakfast but I'm sure it was fine!
The only possible issue was that it's right by a busy road, but just bring earplugs and that sorts it. It's the kind of place you won't want to sit in all day, but then again you're in Shanghai so why would you anyway?!

What a nightmare!!! Worst hote....
I can't find enough words to express how bad my experience has been during my stay at this hotel. I arrived there at 2 am and I was welcomed (not really) by 2 receptionists that do not speak any english at all. Infact nobody speaks any english there. To communicate with them i have had to use body language and some sort of internet translator. The rooms could be the perfect scenes for a horror movie. A part from an amazingly strong smell of smoke, the room was full of spider webs every were, the wall were so dirty and full of mould. More over there was a constant noise throughout the night that makes sleep impossible. Never again there. Trust me, avoid this place.

Cheap hotel NOT english-speaki....
We got to the hotel from Pudong Airport firstly by MagLev (301 km/h), then by subway, line 2 then 10. Tube station Siping Road is far just 5' walk. Rooms are clean and well serviced. However, they never changed laundry, even if the room was cleaned daily. Room clean and ordered, we slept quite well (of course, tireness after 8 km walk every day has helped).
No people speaked a word of english; however they helped me thru the use of my mobile dictionary, and we've already understood each other.
On check-in I had to give a 100 RMB cash deposit, which they gave me on check-out (maybe for the electonic key).
Shanghai is a fantastic city, fully accessible by a tube-near hotel. Price was very cheap. Food at each quality level is everywhere in Shanghai. What else?
Well, a truly enjoable stay!
