This is a hotel which is well hidden in a courtyard and has not a big number of rooms. I would recommend it for those who are tired from big chain hotels and look for something different. The beds are a bit low for Western standards, but quite ok for sleeping. Staff speaks very limited English. Two choices of breakfast - Western or Chinese. In March breakfast room was quite chilly , but it should be nice in summer. I will try to come back in summer as well:))

Character guest house in fabul....
We were recommended this guest house by a local to experience a different side of Shanghai (after having stayed at The Andaz last time) and we're very glad we experienced some time in the former French concession.
The location of B'La Vii is great - easy to find in taxi from the airport, close to great restaurants & wine bars, and an easy walk to the subway. Plus it was just a joy to wander around the neighborhood away from all the tourists.
The service was very friendly and attentive but be aware only the Manager speaks English and he's not always on premises. That said, me being a non Mandarin speaker and the receptionist being a non English speaker still managed to communicate via pictures, charades & the latest translator app on her phone - all with a very patient & friendly attitude.
The rooms had a lot of character - not 5 star luxury - but that's not to be expected in a local guest house.
Recommended (with a night at the Grand Hyatt to round out the Shanghai experience..)

Located in the most beautiful ....
I was in Shanghai as a business traveler and decided to stay in B'la vii house for 2 nights as I missed my days staying in French concession as an expat couple of years ago.
French concession is the most beautiful area in Shanghai and this hotel location is prefect if you would like to experience the old shanghai. Around the area you will easily find lovely roads covered by trees and you can find beautiful mansions along the side with interesting gallery, restaurants, cafes, little modern boutiques in contrast with old shanghaiese walking around with their dogs who lived in the neighborhood.
For the property itself, the hotel has a lovely inner courtyard where you can have breakfast in the morning or some complementary refreshment from the coffee corner. Breakfast is either western (an egg, some toasts, bacon and sausages) or Chinese (congees, an egg and pickles).
I stayed in the first floor deluxe king room, room is spacious with high ceiling where there are couple of ceiling windows passing through some day night. The side windows are closely facing the house next door so the room overall is a bit dark in day time. Curtain is like a thousand old and hasn't been cleaned for decades. Bathroom is ok lacking maintenance but it's acceptable. Internet is super slow.....it took forever just to download a map from Baidu. Services is minimal but it gives some local touch and homely feel. If you're expecting 5 star lever perfect services, this is not a place for you.
The hotel is not located on main road where there are high taxi traffic however, if you walk towards Gaoyou road corner, you will easily find couple of taxi there as a lot of taxi drivers will pop into the public toilet there for a little break.
The hotel is also walking distance to Lost heaven, one of my favorite restaurants in Shanghai.

Lovely experience in the Frenc....
I got the Kapok room which is on the ground floor (2nd least expensive type). The location is great, right in the heart of the French Concession with nice restaurants and bars within walking distance. Really feels like the heart of old Shanghai. Metro is a further walk away but still reachable. I love such boutique hotels compared to large hotel chains. The rooms are furnished in an oriental style and full amenities. I like the large tub. Pity the pillows are a tad subpar (not enough stuffing). Other than that the service was excellent and security fairly good. They asked me and my guest about our identities when we walked in during our stay. Also they helped me to get a nail cutter when I required it. Kudos. The breakfast was traditional Chinese and tasted pretty authentic. Another plus is that drinks in the mini-bar are complimentary. Also the tea selection is pretty good. In short, I would highly recommend this place though I did get comments that the price was quite steep.

It could be perfect if they go....
The location is perfect in the French Concession. Never more than a 10 minute walk from a nice cafe (Marienbad), a good restaurant, and Eddy's bar is nearby too. You get a warm welcome and the entrance to the hotel - courtyard with pond, Thai restaurant on site - is charming, and the interior design and layout of the accommodation is lovely. Shanghai 1930's meets international boutique hotel style. Breakfast is fine - but I'd have been happier with less - and all the people who work there are charming. But...when the reception team said they hadn't received our upfront payment but Expedia said they had paid, their lack of experience made an annoying situation worse, and ended up with me paying again, as noone could deal with the administrative solutions proposed by Expedia to solve this. Anyway the good news is you get a better deal if you deal direct with the hotel - but it took the edge of what could have been a pleasant stay.
