Tradition Meets Luxury
Yihe Mansions offers the perfect blend of traditional style (in the buildings housing the rooms and the gardens in which they are set) with modern standards of room furnishings and facilities. The rooms are furnished to a high standard, are of a very generous size and offer all the comforts you'd expect of a luxury hotel. Some rooms on upper floors have the addition of a terrace. Staff were helpful and welcoming.

Recommended (with a caveat)
If you speak Chinese I would recommend Yihe Mansions without hesitation. The grounds/ buildings are beautiful (an oasis of calm in the midst of busy Nanjing). The staff tried hard to be helpful and were all really nice.
But there is little helpful information in English which made it difficult for me to understand how the hotel worked. The restaurants/ cafes didn't open at the times on the signs next to them and I couldn't effectively ask questions. When I asked if they could arrange a city tour or tour guide the member of staff on reception looked slightly bemused and wasn't able to help.
Having said that, I am still pleased that I stayed at this hotel. It's like living in a piece of history. There is a lovely book store/ coffee shop 2 minutes down beautiful tree lined streets (a sub branch of Librairie Avant Garde). And in the end tourist maps, taxis (which the hotel could call) combined with an easy metro system meant I was able to do all the tourist sights I wanted to.
We could have stayed at one of the big American chains and that might have been easier but it wouldn't have been half as much fun.

Unlike any other hotel experie....
The Yihe Mansions is a community of old Republic of China era mansions. One mansion houses the lobby, another is for dining, others are hotel rooms. We keyed into ours from the outside. Overall - it is well-worth the visit for its historical beauty and its quiet and unique setting.
Here are the pros and cons:
Pros: 1) Great setting, magical landscaping, walking paths, and outdoor patios. During the day, it is open to the public because of its beauty and park-like qualities. 2) Quiet - you can actually hear the birds singing - a rarity in China's large cities. 3) Mansions are well-appointed, charming and comfortable. 4) Walks through the neighborhood just outside of the mansions are equally charming and a great way to experience local Chinese life in a relaxing setting.
Cons: 1) Dining ambience could be charming but the white, fluorescent type lighting kills the intimacy of the two spaces. Do not expect a bustling breakfast and dinner scene - the hotel is small so we often had the dining room to ourselves. 2) English is not as commonly spoken as in other major cities in China. We were not able to locate an English map of Nanjing - the only map was entirely in Chinese characters - though that did not impede us from getting around. This is a Nanjing issue not Yipe Mansion issue. 3) Service in the dining area was less attentive than other relais chateaux properties and five star hotels we've experienced- this may have also been the result of our lack of Chinese and their struggle with English. 4) For a five star experience - hotel was missing a beat - mainly attributed to service. Having said that - the hotel met all of our needs and even exceeded our expectations on one of our sight-seeing trips by arranging for some students at Nanjing University to give us a tour.
Overall - it is a hotel of charm and distinction and should be experienced, especially if looking for a break from China's bustling cities.

This place with its re-furnish....
I regularly go to Yihe Mansions (????) for walks enjoying the splendid surroundings that it offers right in the middle of the city. The hotel is an open concept (with several buildings) with certain areas closed to the public to reserve privacy for its guests. The variety of flowers, bushes, tress available ought to be the most extensive among hotels in Nanjing.
The bakery in Yihe Mansion (located Oufang Building) serves wonderful afternoon tea, cakes and cookies. Peter, who is in charge of the bakery is a very nice chap and my kids know him as a friendly "big" brother.
There are 6 mini-musuems located in 6 different buildings within Yihe Mansions. These include a museum on Xue Yue ????, a famous general who fought valiantly against Japanese Occupation during WWII. There are museums for Chinese Cuisine, School Uniforms, Opera Music during China Nationalist Government Period (1930's - 1940's).
I love visiting this place and will continue to do so with my family.

Very nice and original feel about the whole place. Each room is set in a separate house containing 4 bedrooms in total. The rooms are well decorated and feel luxurious. The room service food was very good and the breakfast very nice too. The service was a little hit and miss. Couldn't get a tourist map of Nanjing and couldn't recommend any restaurants in the area. Overall would return.
